The Health and Migration Survey (HMS) project examines child health outcomes and maternal reproductive behavior using new longitudinal data. Its objective is to resolve some of the contradictory results found in prior studies of migrant health and to assess the effects of migration on health among current U.S. migrants, prior migrants, and non-migrants in Mexico.
The project investigates the linkages between migration and maternal and child health. It contains two key components:
- the collection of new longitudinal data about migrant health from households in Mexico and the United States; and
- the analysis of these data with respect to infant and child mortality, child health, reproductive maternal health and contraceptive use, and use of U.S. health and social services such as food assistance and welfare programs.
As of July 1, 2001, this project has received substantial support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, National Science Foundation, Institute for Research on Poverty, USDA, Mellon Foundation, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
